What an unbelievably momentous year 2015 has been.
Warrington VMM was very much back with a vengeance. The sun shone all day, so attendance was well up on last year – in fact it was the largest town centre event Warrington has ever seen, with somewhere in the region of 14,000 people attending, the largest number of stall holders and contributors ever, covering the largest physical area; the entire of the three main streets, Town Hill, and two adjoining open-air Market squares, and it was the opening event of this year’s Warrington Festival.
What will I remember most? The colours: of the stalls, the knights, the costumes, the dragons, the pageant, lots of artists, Greek cooking in the open air, the way our team and Paul’s market team pulled together to get it all set up, the skeleton in the stocks with a sign saying ‘Caught Stealing Brownies’, musicians and dancers who had never met working together, noisy combat, and much more!
One moment touched me. I overheard the jousting Knights of the Damned talking to a member of the public and I didn’t realize they use horses which are retired (‘out to pasture’) thus saving them from an early grave, and choose young riders from their local riding clubs giving them a unique new career. Go boys – that’s why you’re one of us.
Almost the entire Council and the Mayor and Mayoress turned out to help our ‘Wicked King John’ (Sweeney the market butcher) sign the Magna Carta, accompanied by the Disney Princesses, a Chinese Dragon, and a Fairy Flash mob (I kid you not!). This event just keeps on giving.
Once again, the family of traders, demonstrators and musicians at this event pulled together exceptionally well maintaining the high standard and great atmosphere of our events.
