In a sense, the first two events staged at Warrington were testing the waters to see if the concept of a regular Viking Medieval Market event worked in an urban setting.
After the first two years’ test runs, this year’s ‘Legends’ could really be viewed as the first repeat event with most of the team of contributors that have become our regulars.
This event was also the first time during which musical performance was prominently featured – with London based medieval dance band ‘Serpentyne’ setting the tone for all future musical contributions. It was also the first year we have displays of real medieval archaeology from the South Trafford Archaeology group and Archaeopteryx Antiquities. It was a good ear for Vikings, fairies and knights all round.
We had the largest combat arena ever in the open space next to Time Square, and the largest number of knights to date with Andrea and Steve joining the team for the first time. Andrew (soldier and Viking) and Steve (The Black Knight) donned chain mail, and Jamie was in attendance in full late 14th century plate.
In our collection of quirky additional contributors, we had two Morris Dancing troops, a Victorian traveling pipe organ, cakes and Hog Roast, an authentic period vegetable stall (complete with purple and yellow carrots), animated puppets ‘Sally’ and ‘Forth’, and a display of genuine prop swords used in film and television. The whole event was also broadcast live throughout the town by Radio Warrington.
For the next three years, the event was advertised on ITV Granada for the week leading up to the date, the weather was kind to us, and thousands of members of the public supported the 2013 event, proving that we had hit upon a highly successful formula which has been repeated many times since.
