After our first appearance in 2011, we were invited back to Warrington to do something bigger, and thus, the first Viking Medieval Market was born.
From an organiser’s perspective, it became apparent during the course of this event that it takes a very special team to do what we turn up and do at every event – and that goes for all reenactors, stall holders, role players, costume characters or even a film/tv actor! What we need, and what our team is made of, is communicators.
Some of the contributors to the first event include, but are not limited to, two magnificent Viking ships, medieval birds of prey, tarot reader Julie with her gypsy caravan, Shoot-A-Knight using live targets, various food stalls and, of course, the Hnaefatfl stall (half of Warrington is still trying to work out how to play the game, while the other half still can’t pronounce it!).
It’s not often that so many people who have never met before gel into one, creating the fantastic atmosphere at the event, but it happened then and has happened at every event since. It takes courage and skill to face the public in a situation as close as a modern busy town centre.
All those who were a part of this event proved they were one big family, very capable of communicating their expertise to the public.
The message from the very beginning has been this: if all you’re looking to do at our events is huddle around a smouldering campfire in a muddy field with your mates, please don’t come! With that being said, we had in excess of 8,500 people who did come and loved what we did… which prompted a further event in 2013!
