This year’s Viking event at Formby was the fifth and most successful event for what is undoubtedly our most popular trading event.
Around six traders camped on site overnight on the Friday and were woken by the enthusiastic sounds of other traders arriving at 7:00am on the Saturday. Everyone knew what they were doing and where they should be, creating a nice smooth set up with hundreds of visitors throughout the day.
The Formby Scout group provided three tents and ‘Viking Burgers’ (fantastic little buns with gherkin horns) throughout the day.
There were strong performances throughout the day in the arena by the fighting Knights of Failsworth and their guest fighter, the ‘Mighty Oak’ (James), who was less mighty the day after being attacked by wild children with foam swords and hammers! The arena also saw several fire dancing shows by Freyer ‘fire sprite’, which captivated audiences.
The usual Viking ships and authentic reenactors gave displays throughout the day and Rob introduced the full range of his newly improved Birds of Prey display – I think everyone was bowled over by his new ‘van owl’!
The indoor Fairy Festival produced a wide range of legendary products, including ‘Dragon Eggs’ (caramel filled chocolate eggs covered in a thick layer of brownie, then covered in a layer of chocolate, then sprinkled with glitter!). We had possibly the brightest colours the inside of the Gild Hall has ever seen and enough fairy dust to sink the Viking ship!
This event is so good, that we already have it booked again for next year.
