This was, quite simply, the biggest medieval event ever held on Welsh soil.
In total, we estimate approximately 40,000 members of the public attended in and around the entire city of Conwy, with every area of the event consistently full of visitors.
Contributors included seven Morris groups, four dance troupes, three jousting teams alongside a full sized jousting and combat arena, six large authentic tented camps, over 700 reenactors and costumed characters, 70 traders over three markets – the Wool Market in the Square, the Viking Medieval Market on the High Street and Trade of Thrones on the Quayside. We also had a Viking camp and Viking ship sailing in the harbour, Shakespeare in the castle (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and a banquet for 240, which was visited by the current Lord of Conwy for the first time in 56 years!
For those of you that enjoy action, there were three teas of fighting nights, circus skills and street performers, the real Conwy jester, at least 30 dragons of various sizes and origins, a dancing bear with an handler, two executioners and, of course, a full live music program on Stage One on the Quayside and Stage Two in the Blue Bell Pub.
The even covered the entire medieval city of around two and a half square miles and took nearly 5 hours to walk around. Four of our stalls sold out and three had the best takings in the history of their business!
A special thanks goes out to all members of the VMM team, without which we would not have been able to do it. This includes Mark Olly, Andrea Olly, Elizabeth Kellett, Drew Barnes, James Jackson, Andrea Critchley, Steve Critchley, Helder Rock and Andrew Candy.
Are we going to do it again? The current view is not as big as this first year, but possibly in the future – watch this space…
