We had an exceptionally good turn out of folks for this event in posh kit and we enjoyed the hospitality of the whole village on the hottest day of the year in Appleton Thorn, Cheshire.
An army of crusaders took to the streets to protect the marching of the thorne through Appleton Village (begging the question, how did anyone survive in chainmail and linen in the deserts?).
It was 830 years since Adam de Dutton brought a branch of Joseph of Arimathea’s Holy Thorn tree back to his home village, Appleton Thorn, when the third crusade ended in 1187. We were personally requested to parade and guard the current Holy Thorn tree for this internationally important folklore event.
Most of the local and regional press covered the event, with the most notable being the police officers who took it in turns to have their photos taken with the knights and ladies in kit, to send them around the stations. Within half an hour the snaps made it onto the official Facebook pages for the district!
It was an honour to take part in such an important anniversary.
